  • Sale Of A Churchill Letter

A LETTER in which Winston Churchill issues a rallying call for the defeat of Hitler is to go under the hammer. The rare note - sent just days after the outbreak of WWII - is addressed to employees of A Whyman Ltd, of Finsbury North London. Experts believe the company produced vital naval supplies, with Churchill keen to impress upon them their duty on the home front to help defeat Hitler. The letter headed "A personal letter from the First Lord of the Admiralty the Rt Hon Winston Churchill M.P." is accompanied by the war time leaders signature and dated September 16, 1939. Written on a typewriter on plain white paper, Churchill says: "At the beginning of the present struggle I wish to impress upon every man and woman in your employment the urgent importance of the Government work on which you are engaged. "The zeal and craftmanship [sic] of those who like them are equipping our fighting forces will be a decisive factor in the defeat of Hitler and all he stands for. "I shall be glad if you will convey to them my conviction that in their present occupations they are serving their King and Country no less effectively than those who have joined His Majesty’s Forces for active service afloat and ashore." The letter goes for sale at Mullock's Auctioneers next sale of historical documents at Ludlow Racecourse, Shropshire, on May 21. Richard Westwood-Brookes, the auctioneers historical documents expert, is expecting global interest in the rare document. He said: "Just why Churchill chose to send this particular letter on that day is a mystery. "He was in Scapa Flow that day, in his role as First Lord of the Admiralty, so it is likely that the company he was writing to - A Whyman Ltd – were involved in supplying naval equipment. "We have not been able to trace this particular company, but papers which come with the letter suggest they were based in Finsbury, North London – and yet the letter itself is endorsed on the back ‘Removed from France in Managers Office’. "Letters of this nature, written in typically Churchillian language, are highly sought after by collectors, and this one, written so soon after the outbreak of war and mentioning Hitler by name is particularly rare and we are expected worldwide interest."
